3d Software/Job Stats 2004

I have compiled some interesting industry statistics here, by flipping through more than 200 job postings posted between October 2003 and February 2004, and tracking which 3d software packages are being used in games, films, and visualization. I got this data from various job boards on the net, including Gamasutra, CGChannel, CGTalk, 3dBuzz, and Animation World Network. I have tried to break things down to the sub-industry, the software used, and the locations of the companys. The bulk of the statistics are represented on this page, but if you want the original Excel sheet to analyze even more, feel free to get it here: 3dJobStats.xls

Note: If a company had multiple job postings, I tried to ignore them, as this could skew the data.

Software by Industry

For the industry as a whole, Max and Maya are the clear leaders. 24 of the Max positions also requested Character Studio knowledge.

Softimage/XSI is in some demand, while Lightwave (LW), Houdini, Renderman, Cinema 4d, Motion Builder/Filmbox and Mental Ray (Others) are far down the scale.

*Note that the sheer number of jobs in games is far larger than for film and visualization combined.

In games, once again, Max and Maya are well ahead of the others.

Only XSI had any other notable demand.

In Film, Maya seems to be the dominant player.

For video/visualization, once again it's Max and Maya respectively.
